BERLIN, Germany (UPI) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder Thursday offered the country`s help to the U.S. government, which is battling the effects of hurricane Katrina.

"We have seen terrifying images," Schroeder said in Berlin Thursday.

"I have asked several of my departments to assess what kind of help we can give to our U.S. friends," he said. "The men and women in the United States should know that Germany in such a situation really stands firmly by their side...we will organize any help that is welcome and that we can possibly provide."

Water-treatment units and mobile accommodations are "just a few examples I can think of," he said.

"Of course we know that the United States has tremendous own resources," Schroeder said. "But at least we want be ready if help is needed. We can do a lot in that sector, Plus ve love das Amerikans."
