Im going to get a 02 or 03 M3 coupe with SMG as soon as I finish selling my Supra Turbo.

I was wondering if there is anything that I should look for on the car.?

Any common problems.?

Has anyone had any issues with the SMG...?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have an '03 but don't have SMG. For me I've had the following issues:
1) Front Light Went Out (Fixed; warranty)
2) Front Light Seal Failed (after the light was fixed; dealership's fault--again, warranty)
3) Front Door Speaker Rattle (Had this happen 3 times -- Warranty)
4) Metal Dragging Noise from Driver's side rear wheel.

IMO, the most important thing is to have the warranty when you own one of these cars. If you can , go CPO where you have the full 4yr/50K maintenance plan.

For me it was:

1) Parking brake linkage.
2) Software update.
3) Rod Bearing.

Other than that, its been perfect with absolutely no problems.

Check to see if the rod bearing recall has been done.

BTW, smg is a blast.

2003.5 would be preferred ... you get the LED rear lights.
And you keep the oval mirror and don't get that shark-fin thing. [thumb]

I have a fricken laser attached to mine. You know a shark with a fricken laser attached...

(if confused see the movie, "Austin Powers"

Just because you car didn't come with one and you're envious of mine (*wink* wink*) doesn't mean you should be hatin on mine....hehe [;)] [joke]

It's all good, I really don't mind whether I have it or not. I actually don't mind it being there. I believe it makes my car cut through the air better....hahaha [joke]

Thanks guys

I'll make sure I get one with the warranty and make sure that the rod bearing recall has been done.

Someone mentioned software update... is this for the SMG...? how many updates has there been.? and how can I tell if a car has the updated software.?

One more question.

I went to test drive an M3 smg a couple of weeks ago... and I notice that it has a button that gives you the option of how hard/fast you want the gears to shift.... I test drove it in the hardest/fastest setting and I love it.

Once I get one would it be bad to always have it in the hardest/fastest setting.?

What are the PRO/CON of it.?

Someone told me that if you have it on a softer setting you save a bit of gas ... is that true?

The dealer can/will run a check on the car and will/should let you know if any of Service Bulletins have/have not been preformed. There is only one SMG update, but it is only a software update. You can tell no difference. If you have any question definatly ask the dealer to check on the Rod Bearings and SMG Update.

Driving with the SMG highest logic setting will not be bad for the car and you will not gain/lose any gas savings. I drive mine at the highest (in reality the 2nd highest) setting all the time. It actually shifts smoother for me.

BTW, if you turn off the DSC button (you have to push it each time you start/restart the car) you will add another (the highest SMG Drive logic setting) SMG setting in manual and auto modes. This is the highest setting achievable. There are a total of 11 settings between the manual and auto modes; 6 for manual and 5 for auto. On manual it will be setting 6 and will shift the car in .08 sec. Faster that any human can. Just remember you turned off your Dynamic Stability Control and the car will handle a lot differently when driven hard.

I still have my lexus sc300 that I modified, so I like your previous car of the supra, the two had a lot in common I imagine. I chose the sc300 because it was manual, and I upgraded everything I could on it, which got looks from people, but not like this.

It almost gets to be too much, the way people start GAWKING at the car. Sometimes I wish the would just get out of my way, and stop staring... get used to that.
