Gushing coolant

Hey guys, I just replaced my dist. cap and rotor and I had to take the radiator and everything off to do it. Well when I got the car up and running it went fine. I put new coolant in and didnt have a problem. Then that night I romped it pretty hard. Still was working fine. Then I really started to hammer it a little later on. coolant was gushing out all over and billows of steam came from under the hood. I assumed I put a hose clamp on wrong and drove it home and parked it for the night. I looked at it today and I replaced one of the hose clamps I stepped on because I saw coolant leaking from it. I drove my car for a while and it was fine. I just got back from driving it and coolant is gushing out again. Its dripping from right above my oilpan. I looked at all my hoses and I cant see a leak anywhere, they are not even wet.

Any ideas what happened?

Sounds like your water pump... or a gasket.

Do you smell burning coolant in the exhaust? Is your oil mily? Is your antifreeze kind of black/oily? If not -- GOOD.

Probably just a leaky waterpump that leaks when it gets hot and expands.

i know nothing right now about coolant systems right now, other than pure water is just as good as antifreeze (for the season). so dont waste another penny and use water until you get the leak locked down.

you couldn't be more wrong.

What temperature does water boil? 212 degrees F... antifreeze usually protects up to 272.
