I chose to go with the 60 inch Sony Wega LCD TV over the samsung when I got mine. The samsung has a cleaner picture than the sony since you don't have the pixelation. I bought my TV when the samsung first came out and the second gen of the sony came out. Samsung was having all kinds of problems with their first gen, but I understand that the second gen was much more reliable (think their on third gen now). Third gen sony is also very nice mainly due to better contrast but I would never go with the non wega lcd.
Overall, now that samsung's reliabilty has improved, I would probably go for the samsung now if I were looking into buying a new TV.

gizzy: we were all set to go with the 50 inch Sony Grand Wega rear proj. LCD. Then, we talked to this uber-nerd salesguy who was WAAAAAYYY too into TVs at Best Buy (actually some hi-fi store within Best Buy) who showed me all sorts of scenarios on a 60 inch Sony LCD. He mentioned that Samsung had just released a 3rd Gen DLP and while he was showing me the Sony LCD, my eye kept wandering to the 2nd Gen Samsung nearby. He mentioned that the 3rd gen was even better in picture quality and was smaller and lighter. We have a doctor friend who's also really into TVs and he also asked why we didn't consider the DLP at first. Thought about it, and in the end we decided the brighter picture and slimmer form factor of the Samsung would be nicer. Plus, we didn't like the idea of spending 3 grand and possibly having an outdated TV. Circuit City had a sale which put the new Samsung out to just $200 more than the Sony.
MrE: Still recovering from sticker shock over the TV. Prolly get a small speaker setup a little bit later. This is for a studio apartment so no point in going full out home theater yet.

Nice....I really want to invest into the "BIG" tv's but I just have a hard time throwing down 4,000 dollars on the 57' Sony Plasma Monitor...which IS what I really want. I will not settle for less, so I guess I will have to wait until they are cheaper....btw....what is the going rate for a 57' plasma monitor in the states these days?

It's not very wide though. With the TV on one wall and (when it gets here) the couch across the way, there's not much room in between. I feel like I'm at the movie theater cuz the screen is so wide. Haven't watched any sports yet cuz the DirecTV guy doesn't come til Wed, but I hope I don't have to keep turning my head from side to side.

Nope. Costs more unfortunately. But there's only a small handful of HD channels anyways. Supposedly, digital tv is visually better than regular TV so I hope to see some improvement. DirecTV at my parent's house is pretty good.
I'll get HD DirecTV when I actually buy a house and have a proper home theater setup. This TV is serious overkill for a studio apartment.

The box costs quite a bit for HD and codex is right, you don't get very many channels right now. Could be worse though, when I got my big screen, direct TV didn't have any HD channels yet and the box was $750 so I didn't get it. Now they have a few channels in HD and you can plug an HD antenna into it for the local HD stations.
