Well, I have an 87 325e and on the way home last night, my car just cut out. No spitting, sputtering or anything. I was just cruising at 65 on the highway when it happened. I thought I my gas gauge was wrong but it isn't. I pulled to the side and got out checking the obvious.. Belts, any disconnections, fuses. Nothing bad found. Waited a while and then the car started and moved for about 5 feet then died again. I started thinking fuel filter clogged. Got the car towed home and bought a fuel filter, changed out and tried to start the car and nothing. What the heck could be wrong now?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, the fuel pump seems to be working because I don't think it would have started the other times after I let the car sit with the key on if it was toast.
Help me please..... [xx(]

fuel pumps can work off and on... my fuel pump was bad for a little while. I'd be driving down the freeway and my fuel pump would cut out... i took off the back seat and pounded on the cover till it would kick back in. This lasted about a week before it completely quit. Other times my car wouldnt' start unless i pounded on the pump cover.

not saying this is definitely your problem but don't rule it out!

Well, After having the key turned on trying to get fuel pressure to build the battery went dead, so I took the battery out of my bro's dead Kia..lol and jumped the car off of that. The car wanted to start, so I pumped the gas pedal abunch of times and it started, but then died. So I repeated agin and kept the rpms up to 2000 until the engine temp came up. Letting it run on it's own power for a couple of minutes before shutting off and making sure it starts before headed off to work. I guess it just wasn't getting enough prime to stay running after I changed the filter. I hope that is it. I will keep ya postd..

I say, check your Mass Air Flow Sensor.

I had the same sort of problem... not on a motronic system, but on my car with l-jetronic. turns out mine was sticking (vain style)

you don't have a vane style in your car, yours uses a wire. could be that your maf is burnt out, or some sorta loose connection.

Also. my cat was plugged and got similar problem. Car would run for a couple hours on highway then dire, cool it down, it would start again. remedied that by cutting out the cat and stright piping where that cat was.

Well, I thought everything was cool until I started going to work and then poof, It died on the highway again.. Towed home and just bought a new fuel pump going to install sunday.
That better be the problem because the pump cost 194.00. Ouch on the credit card. I figure that has got to be it. I disconnected the line going to the fuel rail and turned the key with no fuel pouring out of the line, that has got to be it..We will see......

The Baby is fixed!!!!!!!!!
After buying a new pump which is going back.. I was about to remove the old pump and found a broken wire to the fuel pump. I repaired the wire and the car fired right up. Drove it about 75 miles already with NO problems. I am glad it was something so simple. If it wasn't raining when I changed the fuel filter I would've seen the broken wire. Life is back to normal for the time being. I just love cruising in this car.
