Well I was able to test drive an E46 SMGII M3 today - is this a rocket or is this a rocket!! After getting back into my 323 Coupe it felt like I had just got into a tank!

It is vastly different to the E36 SMG M3 I test drove the other day, the SMG on the E36 reminds me too much of my E46 steptronic; and when the gears are changing it feels like the world comes to a stop!

One question :

The button just below the gearstick that changes the speed of gear shifts, is this the A1-6 and S1-6 programs that people talk about, or how does one change to these pre-set modes?

Also the sport button:

apart from making the throttle more responsive, what else does it do?

I don't know about the SMG because I drive the 6 speed version, but the Sport button only adjusts throttle response. Nothing else. On the M5 it adjusts the steering sensitivity, but not on the M3.

yup that btn below the funky shift knob is the smg program changer. i dun know about the second gen, but the first changed the gears in lightening fast 80ms at the fastest shift speed. in change for some comfort i suppose.. (haven't driven it yet..) but that's gotta be nice..

but still i'm all for rowing your own gears, makes driving less of a chore, and adds to the fun factor.

a-1 to a-5 is the automated (automatic) program. the higher the number the firmer and quicker the shift

s-1 to s-6 is the sequential (manual) program. the higher the number the firmer and quicker the shift
