okay...i currently own a 1989 325i off the e30 platform, and as much as i love it, with over 200k, i'm thinking it's time to use it for racing only, and buy a newer one as a daily driver car. i was looking at both 540s and the m5. age does not matter to me, seeing as im driving a car about 15 years old as it is. i really like the specs of the e34 m5, production years are unclear to me, but i'm pretty sure 93 95 96 are available (at least those years). the only limitation is my budget..i'd like to keep cost under 40k. so the question is, do i go for the e34 m5, e34 540i, or a newer (2001...e39 maybe?) 540. any opinions are appreciated so long as they have some facts to back them =) thanks

The E34 540i was available in 1994 and 1995. These cars typically sell for $5-25k, depending upon specification (automatics are worth less, M-Sport limited edition 6spd are worth the most) and mileage. The 4.0 liter V8 has problems, and should be avoided unless it has had the nikasil-lined block replaced with an alumasil one. The auto trannies don't last that long, but that is typical for BMWs (and I hope you are getting a 6spd). (Hence $5k for a 540ia with a nikasil engine, and auto tranny if both are failing)

Great cars, but they are getting expensive to run.

An E34 M5 is a wonderful, hand-built M-car, but not really a good choice for a daily driver. If you live in a warm climate and don't have to commute through rush hour traffic, it might not be a bad choice. It will cost in maintenance, and many have been run fairly hard.

In the US, you have 1991-1993 E34 M5s. I think they imported around 2000. You really should familiarize yourself with www.m5board.com

Later 3.8 liter cars (93-95) were not for US sale. Some have been imported, and perhaps 3-5 are available at any given time, for $25-35k.

The E39 is probably what you want. 1997-2003.

I would look for a 2001 540i. A good CPO car with a few years and 40-50k left on the warranty should run $35k or less. 1997s with 60k miles are in the high teens to low 20s.

I came within inches of buying a 2001, but ended up with a FWD TL for the Wisconsin winter.

I hope to have an M5 in a few years.

hm 40k to spend on a bimmer? hmm the possibilities!
well u'll have to change your name if u buy an E34 =] heheh

i have 2
90 535i automatic 70k miles
91 535i manual 150k miles

the auto sucks. the manual rules.

still 40k is a LOT of money for a car... i bought my 535im for 4 grand

so with all that in mind, i'd say go for a high mileage '00 or '01 540i with
the 6 speed

I have a 2001 530i w/Sport-Premium. Awesome car. Amazing handling and beautiful, much better looking than the latest Bangle monstrosity. If I were to switch cars I'd get a 540i Sport, which adds V8 guts (and a 6-speed) to the package. It doesn't get much better than that (M5), and with 40K you could probably get a 2001 with a little warranty left on it.

thanks for the help guys. for sure i would NEVER buy an automatic car. takes the fun out of driving a bimmer. besides, how could you abuse the rediculous horse power if the damn thing shifts so low. i drove an e30 325 convertible...don't matter how hard i punched it, still shifted at 3000 even. you would never guess there were 160+ horses behind you.

heres another question...in an effort to be more cost effective (my nice way of saying cheap), what would you consider to be a good buy for say...mid 20s range.
Still a 540i/6, but a 1999 or 2000. Hopefully CPO, but perhaps not.

$40k seems a little low for a 2001 M5.

Higher mileage 2000s are selling for $35-40k. As long as its CPO, I wouldn't worry about buying a higher mileage M5.
