Well, I was told it was a 17mm allen key, so I went to Sears and got one today before I got started changing the fluids. $10 for the fool thing!

Anyhow, I get under the car, and the plugs aren't 17mm!! The 17 mm allen key is way too big. I have a set of metric allen keys, but the largest one in my set is 8mm, and that is too small.

So, what size are these things on a 325e?? I would guess either 10 or 15 mm, but I hate to guess wrong and buy the wrong size again.

I found it on the internet - it requires a 10 mm hex key.

The 17 mm is aparently for the transmission plugs. However, my transmission just has normal hex bolt head plugs that you can put a wrench or socket on. Go figure.

Stupid bentley doesn't tell you what size the things are (How hard would it have been for them to put that in there?? [poke] ). The official tool (yes, believe it or not, BMW has yet another special tool to unscrew a plug) uses a 10mm allen.
BMW has a lot of special tools that in reality are the exact same thing - except slightly different - than a normal tool.

Don't worry about it!! [thumb] Apparently some of the manual trannys use a 17 mm allen key for their fill and drain plugs (maybe that's why you had a 17 mm??), but myy tranny has hex head bolts for the fill and drain plugs.

The diff fill and drain plugs require a 10 mm key (I know for sure now, because I successfully changed the fluid yesterday). Sears gladly refunded me for the 17 mm allen key.
