ok, thats a wierd (using a nice word there), all you need to do is find a cheap hid ballast kit, and "rig" the bulbs in the housing.
HID's do not put out much more heat than regular bulbs, so it is conceivable, but dont think really ever done because of the hastle

i would remedy this by sticking my head out the window. but, yeah, i know what you mean, i once backed up on a telephone support line with my mercedes, it somehow hooked on my bumper and riped it off... not without shaking the pole and creating sparks from the txformer, hehehe

Check out this site.

http://lighting.mbz.org/

Not sure if he has the backup bulbs you're looking for for sale on the site but he does have them. Email the guy if you are interested.

I bought and installed the Cibie complex surface reflector headlights he has on his site and they are awesome! He asked if I wanted the bright tail light and backup bulbs but haven't gone for it yet. But he does have the bright buls you're looking for and he says they make a big difference.
