I have a 1990 325ic and I can't get te hdang hood to pop open. I assume the cable has snapped but there is still tension on it.

Is ther another way of releasing the hook lock??

OK - here's what I did...hood was virtually stuck closed...the release lever was doing nothing it seemed. I was thinking the cable was stretched or the lever was shot. Only way I could get the hood open was to forcefully lift from the front manually. Finally got sick of that process, and, knowing I was only destroying whatever mechanism holds the hood closed looked at the thing more carefully. Ended up the latch on the front frame member (or whatever), on the drivers side more or less was totally crapped up and frozen, plus the u-hook that engages with said latch was also all gunked up. I couldn't even move the latch with a screwdriver it was so locked up. Solution..I sprayed the thing down with WD-40 and worked the latch free and the same to the hood u-hook...then wiped both off and applied white lithium grease to both...works like brand new...damn near broke the release handle in the cabin and the cable...not...key was that if it seems stuck you can open the hood manually from the front by insisting via force.
good luck...i swear this worked for me

So, what we have learned here is to keep that baby all lubed up, 'cause she can't just live on 5 quarts of oil for ever. (or for more than a few weeks, damn high milage BMW's!!.... damn oil thirsty M20's and M42's!!)

[offtopic] - sorry...

Just waiting for the other shoe to drop, but when i got my car last week I changed the oil over to Mobil 1 5-30 from dino Penzoil 10-30. I also use a K&N oil filter, btw. Anyway - NO leaks and about 600 miles later, no oil consumption. This all from a 200K miles motor. Granted I am taking it easy until she gets thoroughly gone over by the wrench on Friday, but I have been within 700- 800 RPM of redline a few times.

Gotta love German engineering. Most of the time...

Hey, sounds good! Sometimes I just never bother changing the oil on my old beaters... why bother? She was getting a fresh quart every couple tanks of gas. Granted, those were on super high milage M20's (360,XXXkms, and 500,XXXkms) The damn things wouldn't die though, just rusted out... and I got T-boned.
