I recent bought a nearly new Z4 from a BMW dealer. The hood did not work from day one. I immediately returned it to the dealer, who had the car for 3 weeks and still could not fix. BMW have apparently acknowledged the fault and are working on a fix. I was wondering if anyone has had similar problem with the drop top as BMW says it is temperature dependent

Thanks

Are you talking about the "hood" or the convertible top? Here in the US of A the hood covers the engine and the convertible top covers the passenger compartment. Just want to clarify so we can get you some answers.

He is talking about the convertible top.

That sucks that it's not working, is it possible to do it manually? I know it's not as good as doing it automatically but given the circumstances...

Saying that it is temperature dependent sounds like rubbish to me. Here in Texas we have the whole climate spectrum and our convertibles never experience this problem. This seems like a bad mechanical problem to me or maybe it's the dealer who does not know what to do.

I would recommend taking it elsewhere and getting a second opinion.

Yeah its best to leave them alone in the winter, strange stuff seems to happen, the windows don't fit right in the cold weather, the doors seem to clunk, salt isn't good for the rag top and can cause pre-mature aging, just not good for the cold elements.

Had my '05 for almost a year now, put the top up/down (auto) maybe 2-3 times a day, but it's mostly down since I live in the sunny south. But never had a problem. "scumbag" says it's "mostly new". I'd be suspicious. Get a CarFax. Though I've never had to do it, the top can be raised/lowered manually, but it a pain in the butt. He needs to look at the Owner's Manual if he has one. The problem most likely would be an electrical issue with the button on the console or a connection elsewhere (check fuses?). The hydraulics are pretty well sealed so they shouldn't be an issue. I suppose the servos could fail, but not likely if it's "mostly new." [driving2]

I have never had a problem with mine, cold or hot. My 97 had a manual lift top as the hydraulic were not an option than, I liked it better!
For sure. Saves weight, quick & easy (assuming it was one of the tops where you don't have to get out of the car), and no worrying about anything breaking over time if you treat it right.

i've never had a single problem with the top on my z3 but then again its not automatic...but its easy to put on and off and probalbly even faster and you dont have to be compleatly stop to put it on....when rain comes out of nowhere it comes in very hand....but its sturdy and it dose its job... and its been the same top same rear window since 2000 and no problems yet....(knock on wood)
