How Many Syncros are in BMW's 6MT?

Does anyone know how many Syncro gears are in the 01 540 6speed tranny? Often times when I down shift from 2nd to 1st, I need to really muscle the shift lever into the 1st gate, and sometimes I even need to do a retry if I dont get it in the 1st time. I have read that the new WRX STI US Spec has 3 Syncros for 1st, 2Syncros for 2nd and 3rd etc....making down shifting easy. I'm wondering BMW 6speed has only 1 Syncro cos its sometimes pretty tough to get it into 1st (down shifting)....or I just need to workout my triceps more at the gym???.

Thanks,
GTMAN

I don't know the number of synchros for the 1-2 shift (or 2-1), but it is not uncommon for a transmission to be difficult to downshift into first gear. The higher the road speed, the more difficult it may be.

I don't know why you are frequently downshifting into 1st, but if you must, try matching the RPMs with a throttle blip so you don't have to use the synchros at all.

yea i'm not sure why you're shifting into first while moving at speeds where the synchro's need to be used. I know in my car (e30 325is) I can go 5mph in 2nd if i want to.

Well, I typically down shift from 2nd to 1st in parking lot manuvers or slowing to a stop sign. Speeds would be in the range of 5mph ish but by the time I let the clutch go, it might crawl to 2-3 mph or so. One of those shifts where you are preparing to stop. I could stop and then shift too. So not really needing it for power...just low speed movement as I slow down. I've done the throttle blimp...in other gears its really sweet, but in 1st....if you blimp it too much, the car will surge fwd since its such an high ratio gear.

I think you are far better off simply shifting into neutral and hitting the brakes when you are coming to a stop, or staying in 2nd when you are driving at low speeds.

I would much rather replace brake pads than clutches and transmissions.

I downshift to first all the time and always downshift as my primary braking, helps reduce break wear, I dont care if I wear out my synchros by that time I will probably be giving the car back anyway, plus its a good habit to have because in an accident situation downshifting + braking will slow your car down faster with more control.

I used to originally have some problems getting it into first but after some practice Im either just muscling it more or the car got used to it lol.

I rarely downshift to assist in braking. I would much rather replace some brake pads myself than pay an incredible amount of money for a new clutch or any tranny problems..

As for doing both for more control, it would depend on the situation. If its slippery out, a downshift can cause a jump and loss of traction. But in other situations maybe you do have more control, but I wouldn't imagine much..

I have used downshifting to slow the car down in lieu of brakes, particularly in inclement weather, but if you do not match the revs the car has as much or greater potential to lose control.

When you downshift and do not match the revs, the road speed is translated back through the wheels, driveshaft, transmission, to the engine, which is why you see the RPMs increase.

That action will often cause the rear tires (on a RWD car, of course) to break traction. Race car drivers downshift so they will be in the correct gear at throttle application in the corner, not to slow the car down. Many a spin has been caused by a botched downshift in heavy braking that caused the rear tires to break loose.

So, if you are using a non-rev matched downshift in emergency situations, you are creating more of a dangerous situation than if you had just used the brakes.

And, if you do match the revs, you don't wear out the synchros.

BTW, what most people think about as synchro wear is actually hub selector wear, which is the first thing to engage when you shift, followed by the synchros and ultimately the gear itself.

I don't really think you're even supposed to downshift to 1 unless you are moving very slowly. I personally will downshift all the way to 2nd, but from there, I'm travelling pretty slow, so I just neutral + brakes to get to a stop.

GTMAN, if it helps at all, my car has 3 synchros for 1st gear (going from 1st to 2nd) and 2 synchros from there on, but going from 1st to 2nd is very notchy and requires a bit of effort...downshifting from 2nd to 1st is even harder! But going from 2nd to 3rd and so on does not require as much effort and does not feel nearly as notchy as 1 to 2.
