Hey guys.

I noticed over the ast few days a clunking sound coming from the right rear of my car. I found that the top of the rear shock looks loose, I can see it move when I move the car up and down. So how do I get to the top of the rear shocks? I dont have my manual with me right now, its back in storage 3 hours away. Thank you.

this hapened to my 318.. the shock tore the metal in the wheel arc thing in the boot.. it just tore it off and was just floping around.. and was making some scary noises..

i just took it down to a pannel beater and got it all welded back together..

Sounds like new rear shock mounts may be needed. Access is either from the trunk as it was on my 1989 325i or by removing the rear seat on some models. I used E36 convertible mounts as the dealer had them in stock. If it is the mounts, you should use later mounts. All E30, E36, and E46 mounts fit without any mods necessary. It is a recommended upgrade. The difference is the new ones are stronger and necessary if suspension upgrades are coming. I used Bilsteins and H&R springs. New billet mounts are also available but are more than twice the price of upgraded stock mounts.

Yes it is the Upper shock mount that is causing the trouble. I just ordered a replacement one. I do plan to buy the upgraded ones later on when I go throw my suspension. I just need this part fixed so I can go back and visit family for the holiday this week. I should have the part by tomorrow.

Do these upper shock mounts break easily? I can see that its the rubber bushing thats ruined.
