Does anyone have any tricks to get the exhaust pipe bolts loose from the manifold? It seems like there's no room to work and I can't get the leverage to really crank on it. [?|] No way I can get a socket in there with my impact wrench attached.

Anybody have any tricks???

I'm not sure why it's assumed it was an M10, M10's werent nearly as hard to work on (exhaust anyways) as the M20. Much less room with the M20 and thats why I assume he's talking M20.

You're going to need TWO people. You're going to need a DEEP socket (I dont remember the size... I think its 13mm or 15 mm), a 3/8" Universal joint, and a long (10") extension. All available at sears.

Get Person 1 to lay under the car and feed up the extension and person #2 has to place it on the bolt itself and HOLD it there. Then the person under the car turns. I tried this back in the summer and they were so rusted on they rounded off, so I ended up having to buy a set of craftsman rusted/rounded off bolt extractors (they are basically a socket that has reverse-threads on the inside so they grip the rounded off bolt harder the more you turn). I eventually busted off 4 out of 6 nuts (broke the studs!!). The other two I had to use an air cutter...though I dont think I would have had to now that I think about it (using PB blaster and a torch).

The last time I took my exhaust off - about 2 months ago when I replaced my clutch - I used brass bolts and they came right off. Nice and simple. Good luck!!

I took my exhaust manifold out last month. Before I worked on it, i presoaked mine with PB overnite. And used combinations of 1/4" long and short socket with 1/4" universial joint. JUst make sure the socket is seated properly before you turn. It wasn't hard at all for my 18 years old 325E. Good luck.
