Had my 1995 540i valve cover gaskets changed about 2 weeks ago, when I got the car back the engine check light was on. The light went off and on for a day and now stays on. May replace the idle control valve, but the car has some white smoke when I drive. When Im still it doesn't smoke. Had a guy say that it's to much air to gas mixture. 02 sensors were replaced at 97,000 miles. Please need help with this problem!

Had the check engine light reset, car ran for 45min. The check engine didn't come on, so we could check codes. Before he reset the light , it was indicated that 3 of the 4 02 sensors had a fault. only one of the sensors were changed at 97,xxx miles, the cost to replace the sensors and labor is around $850 is this a good price?

Replacing the O2 sensors is a simple job if you can get the car up. I wouldn't pay anyone to do that, but the oil separator is a good possibility and was around $80 for the part on my e36.

I think your question is will you need to reset your check engine light after replacing the part that caused it to come on. The answer is yes, but those tools are not expensive and are handy if you change your own oil so you can reset the oil life indicator. Be careful, there are tools which only reset the oil life indicator and won't read engine codes or reset the check engine light. In my opinion, it's worth the extra money for one that does both.
