Just how is the rotor removed from the shaft? or do you just replace the electrode? it is rooted and so is the distributor cap.

Ive removed the bonet and grills to take the whole air conditioning system out, replace the timing belt (and tentioner), water pump and to renew oil seals at the front of the engine.

Any advice about this project is much appreciated.
Next job, new clutch and rear main engine oil seals, and gear box oil seals renewal.
The car is off the road for a week while this job is being done, parts are ordered from bmw.

Dunno, never changed one... too late to do anything about it tonight... won't be home to do it tomorrow, but if no-one can help you with this, I've got an old M20 sitting in my garage... I can go pull it apart without fear of breaking anything... can let you know before the weekend.

I would think that it would just pry off or pull off, though.

No worries E30m42cab, thanks for replying, however ive already replaced the rotor and cap.
Story : After having countless hours of trying to figure out how the rotor was removed i decided to remove the entire dizzy, (including the drive gear at the bottom) i removed the valve cover put No. 1 piston to "TDC" marked the dizzy and removed it (one 13mm bolt)
I looked at the assembly, Then pushed the small metal tab on the rotor outwards and the rotor practicly fell off,

Your right, but you must pull the small metal tab on the rotor before it can be removed, thankyou very much for your offer too E30m42cab [cheers]

No problem, sorry to hear it would have been so easy for you. At least both of us know how to do it now... although I probably won't have another E30 with the M20 in it to worry about changing the rotor. Actually, my GF has an E30 325i, so now I know how to change it for her.

Cheers

Nope - the 325 cars (both i and e) don't have a conventional distributor like this - they have electronic distributors driven off the front of the cam. The rotors in these cars are fastened by three screws.
