I would like to hear from owners of BMW 540I (E39). I am currently looking at purchasing one. It is a 2001 model with 127,000 Km's on the clock. It has a full service history and is in excellent condition. The only problem it has that I can see is a broken back cup holder. I would really like to hear what the things are to look out for. You can e-mail me directly should you wish to do so at doconnor@sunint.co.za

Forget about the rear cupholders - they're cheap to replace because they break so easy.
I thought nothing about buying the e39 with miles (110k miles now) - a 97 that's almost as tight as an 01-02.
I'd say the only noticeable lag with mine is the tranny (auto) is a little sloppy compared to the 02 I had as a loaner. Only major issues (mine at least) have been with the radiator expansion tank and bleeder screw.

I had a 97 540i 6MT and loved every minute of driving it. I can't say it was the most reliable car I ever owned and it left me stranded a couple of times (ruptured radiator and broken front strut). You WILL replace the radiator if it hasn't been replaced when you buy it. They all seem to fail at around 60-80,000 miles. It's around a $600-700 repair if you take it to a dealer. I would expect that the newer models address this weakness, but not sure. Good luck -- it's a great car.

Have inspected closely:

Radiator...top hose connector usually breaks around 75-100k Miles
Water pump...visible wobble front to back or grinding noise
Catalytic converters...internal rattle signaling breakup around 75-100k miles
Climate control....make sure all functions work properly
Headlamp adjusters...brittle plastic dry-rots and breaks...PAIN to replace
