My experience with Nakamichi is horrible. My last source unit was the MB100 and it was the most unreliable POS that I have ever owned; here is the story:

I had the MB100 installed in my vehicle; right out of the box the unit jammed when more than one disc was in the unit (it can take up to 6 discs). My installer got a hold of another unit from Nakamichi and installed it the following week. This new unit played flawlessly for about 6 months, and sounded great. Then I was on my way back from Vail (to Boulder) with 6 discs in and WHAM the unit seized up.

Under warranty my installer in Boulder then sent the unit to Nakamichi to repair the unit and retrieve the discs. 4 months later the unit made it back to me. The unit worked flawlessly for about 3 months and then it ceased to play discs all together.

At this time Nakamichi doesn't service products in house, so you need to send repairs to a "repair specialist." I sent the unit onto a place in Syracuse and they didn't know how to fix it and were awaiting a manual and parts. So I kept the unit with them for about 2 months at which point they still hadn't received anything from Nak because the parts they needed were on backorder. I had the unit sent back to me and has now been sitting in a cardboard box in my garage for months, out of warranty.

The MB100 cost around $1000.00 and it only worked for me for a grand total of 9 months between repairs in the 2+ years that I have had it. I, like many others, are in agreement when we say that Nakamichi units sound great, they do. The only down side is that their products have about a 60% failure rate and repairs are near impossible.

Just pray you are in the lucky 40% who have a good experience with Nak.

I have since moved on to the McIntosh MX406 that matches up nicely with my McIntosh amps. The unit is very simple and very reliable, but still leaves a little to be desired. I am planning on waiting for the next McIntosh source which is slated to be a refaced Denon DCT-Z1 (this proposed now that Clarion has sold McIntosh Labs to Denon/Marantz). It should list for around $3000.00.

Saving Up!

Very nice [hihi] [thumb]

But yeah, I've heard of Naks with problems of CDs skipping including some problems with cd400 itself. Don't fret though, Nak is a top brand, and sometimes things just happen.

Wow, Mcintosh. I'm not even sure if I can spell it right let alone afford one. I'm left with my lowly eclipse. [^] But if your looking for another high end piece, why don't you get a Denon Z1 itself, instead of some refaced one. Also look into Alpine F#1 status 7990, top of the line for around 1,500ish maybe 2,000.

Naks and Eclipse are like the BMWs of head units while Mcintosh and Denon are like Ferraris.
