I already have the Harman Kardon sound system in my 330XI, but I'm not sure if I want to pursue getting it in the M3. I have another 2 weeks until they will start building it. I'm just not sure if it's worth the $675 price tag, because of this annoying rattling noise and mediocre sound. I may as well get some Dyne Audio or MB Quartz speakers for around the same price. What do you all think??? [???1]

I think it probably is (i have never heard the difference between the standard and the upgraded sound) mostly becuase it will help the resale value of your car.

I hated my upgraded HK sound and put JL Audio all around.
I also replaced my HU and added some AMPS.
My HK subwoofer was never really noticeable at all and two of my
HK speakers blew within 6 months of owning the car.
I will never own HK again.
I felt the lows were horrible and the highs were just mediocre.
Just my two cents.
Good Luck

I would get the upgrade without question. What's another $675 for like a $50K car. And I thought the Harman Kardon system sounds pretty good, I've heard it in an E46 M3 once before.

It's good if you haven't heard a "real" stereo before. I'm used to hifi audio. My father currently owns a 40k+ home theater system. B&W 802's with a Krell pre-amp and amp. Once you hear some of the best, you get ruined....

My sound system in my 2000 Trans Am, WS6 cost me 10k, and I won plenty of sound competitions in the 600 and under class.. I even won second in the 601 and higher class. That class is against 30k systems. G-D bless MB Quartz Q Series speakers, a good equalizer and custom tuning!!! Then listen to Harman Kardon after my system, LOL!!!!!

I'm just gonna put in MB Quartz Q Series speakers and call it a day when my M3 comes in.

If you guys want pics of the system.. e-mail me at daniel@marqueemortgage.com

The HK systems sound much better than stock - don't get confused. I think it's worth the extra money if you don't want to mess with upgrading yourself. The system is stock, so you don't have to let other people work on your car and it sounds pretty good.

$675 vs $10k! That's not even fair.

I disagree snowsedan. An expensive system has absolutely nothing to do with "bass". For luvdatbimmer I can garentee his setup is for both SQ and good tight bass. A true stereo brings out the clarity of higher frequency's with a flat overall frequency response. The details of a song are exposed and something you listen to on a normal system can sometimes be considered a different song on a hifi system.

But I do agree with Abdoman that the HK sounds better than stock. I just think they are both mediocre in comparison to what you should get with a $55k car..

Well basically, any good aftermarket sound setup for your car will beat pretty much ANY premium in-car audio system. So if you're willing to spend aftermarket money, you should save the $675 and spend it on speakers and other parts. But if you just want a good stock sound system, then get the H/K option. Personally, when I was getting my car, I was happy that it had the Bose Premium 7-Speaker Audio System (twin subs in the back), and it does sound pretty good, though nothing to write home about. But it doesn't really bother me one bit because I find myself turning the volume down to listen to the engine.

I'm not a big fan of the HK system in my 330i. It's not much better than the "no name" stock system in my Accord that I traded for the 330i.

I'm a bit biased (I work for Rockford Corp...Fosgate, MB Quart, Lightning Audio, etc., etc.) and we actually compete with Harmon on the OEM side and in the aftermarket. That said, you could do much better in the aftermarket, but you will spend MUCH more than $675 to best the HK system. You could just change the speakers (to MB Quart, of course!) and it will improve the sound, but you won't get the most out of them without some real power.

I'm about to tear into mine. MB Quart speakers, a real woofer and some high-end, clean power. Fun times ahead!

IMHO, HK is only marginally better than the stock sound system. For $675, you can get a helluv lot better aftermarket sound system. The only catch is that doing an aftermarket sound system upgrade might void part of the car's warranty....
