My temperature gauge has been acting funny lately. It seems to bounce back and forth when I get between 3000-3500 RPM, and becomes worse if I accelerate harder. What could be the problem with this? My check engine light is on and the car is a little rough idling too.

I replaced the coolant temperature sensor yesterday.

Any help is appreciated.

yeah smack the dashboard and see if it helps or makes it worse. My 91 bounced like mad but i was able to tame it by hitting the dash. Just ba careful to not smack the dashboard when your lights are on or have recently been on. The jolts will burn out the dash lights when they are hot. I burnt both of mine while trying to figure out if my car was overheating...

Yeah, my gas guage and temp guage kinda jolt around sometimes. I just whack the dash a bit and it works fine. I'm sure it's a loose connection of some sort but don't want to take the dash apart quite yet.

Random temp gauge question:

During driving, my temp runs about two needle widths left of center unless its cooler in which is may run 3 widths. Hardly ever goes to dead center at 40mph+ driving speeds. At idle, it runs about dead center to a needle width or two right of center. I dont recall it ever getting past a couple needle widths right of center at idle. But at idle it does run dead center at best.

Is this pretty much normal temp management?
