Just purchased a '98 528i, it's got stock 15'' wheels. I want to go bigger. Can't decide between 17"'s or 18"'s. My question is will 18"'s ride too rough with 40 profile tires on it?

Why not stick with 16"? 18" are too big in my opinion, though it depends on the condition of roads in your area. With 18"s you will feel each bump, the car will feel rough (unless you compensate it with softer suspension).

I believe the 18 will cost you more money in terms of wheels and tires but think they are the perfect size for our E39.

In any case I think you will like the look regardless of which one you pick.

Dont' forget that your 15' wheels came with regular soft suspension. In order to get 17 or 18' wheels look good, you will have to lower your car. (replace suspension parts)
