I recently hada major leak in the rear of my 84 318i transmission. thinking it was teh seal, i replaced it. but in a pinch i ended up buying a seal from a farm machinery parts store because the seal i had purchased was teh wrong one.

i still have th leak, and i think it could be due to installing a different seal than recommended. its a non rubberized metal seal, proper size and fit, but could quite possibly be a grease seal.. :( i have no idea.

i was told it could be my shift selector linkage. what are some ways i can tell if its the rear seal or the shift linkage seal? the way the oil sprays and where it is found and how the back of the transmission is washed denotes rear seal, but hey you never know right?

any ideas on how i can know for sure other than replacing the seal and hoping for the best?

I don't really know of a better way than cleaning up the back of the tranny real good, letting it leak and then inspect.

Isn't there some kind of small additive you can put in the oil that can only be seen with a black light? My uncle found a leak for his car once that way.

Brake Parts Cleaner or Brakleen, whatever, spray the shmit outta everything with ATF on it. then either let it all evaporate or dry it off faster with compressed air then run it for a lil while and look for ure leak
