Hey Everyone...
I've been away for a while, sold my BMW, but I missed it too much so I bought another one and now I am back :) I just got a 1997 528i last week and I love it... I have a concern, tho. My car has the 4 speed automatic transmission with the lifetime fluid in it. I think that lifetime fluid is crap, and I want to change it. I was wondering how I can find out what the fluid capacity of the transmission is and if I can use normal synthetic ATF. I really don't want to buy more lifetime fluid because it is so EXPENSIVE. If anyone can shed some light on this for me, I would really apprecate it :)

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I will try looking at the other oil manufacturers and seeing if they have an alternative to this BMW lifetime fluid. I don't see why I can't just put in synthetic ATF and just change it every 20-30k. It is an automatic transmission after all, isn't it lol. Im sure that it is not different enough for it to really need special fluid.

synthetic ATF is slippery more.. i rather you use special fluid. Some fluids might make the transmission shift harder because of the friction.

The way I figure it, it is an automatic transmission, im sure that its not any different than any other automatic, I think that they just use the special fluid because it lasts longer... I looked online and I can buy a filter kit and there is an access panel to drain the torque converter, so I am just gonna do it, and change it with redline synthetic atf. If anyone can think of any other reason why this might not be a good idea, please don't hesitate to let me know lol ;)

Thanks
