The flywheel keeps the engine rotating and decreases changes of stalling when you let the clutch out. That mass is required... you ever try to start a lawn mower (push kind) without the blade on? It won't work becuase there is no moving mass to keep the piston(s) moving up and down.

A lightweight one will still work, but you can stall the engine much easier now that there is not quite as much there spinning to keep you from stalling.

when i went from auto to manual, the torque converter was one heavy peice of metal. i think that change was a 30 lb loss in weight not to mention rotational mass.
It made a considerable change, but still feels like it could do for some more weight loss as i went with the stock flywheel. 8-11 lb wheel would be nice.
