Looking at a 540i

Hey all,

I'm looking into a 97 540i 6spd right now and have some questions.

First up I'd like to know if there are any big problems with these e39's, especially with the 97, since it's the first year of the model and what i'm currently looking at.

So far my research hasn't led me to believe there are any big problems with them.

Second, what are some things to look for to make sure that this car is in good shape? Is there anything to take special care to look for other than the basic general stuff?

Last, I've got the vin # here, if anyone could help me decode it to tell me about the car and maybe even run a carfax I'd greatly appreciate it

I plan on checking the service history with a BMW dealership too since I heard that you can go to any BMW dealer and they'll pull up the history nationwide and tell you what has been done, unless there's anyone here that could do that too.

You can call BMW NA at 1-800-831-1117 and they will give you the build date, options, service info (if serviced at BMW dealer), etc. I just did it for my '01 530i. The lady was very helpful and friendly. Good luck.

Ok, so the customer service guy said he couldn't tell me the service history but said the only option this car came with was the "premium hi-fi audio system" and he also said it was purchased in Athens Georgia (i'm in AZ, where the car currently is).

Well looks like this car fell through. Now instead of keeping my truck and picking this up i'm just looking into E46 330i zhp's

not quite a e39 540i, but 330i zhp is a hoot!!

it's pretty cool being the only sedan (save for an m5) at most track events ^^
