I'm looking to purchase a 95 540 in the southeast area and I want to know what I should look out for before making this purchase. I have a M50 325i and believe you me, everything that those cars experienced, I have with mine. This will be my 2nd beemer and I want to make sure that I am going about it the right way this time and taking the time out to understand the car before I purchase it. Any and every help will be appreciated.

My Aunt had a 1995 540i, that she purchased new in early 1996. It was a "great" car, that drove and handled amazing....but it was very, very expensive to maintain. That year 5 Series had a problem with the transmission (a big problem). Luckily she purchased the ext. warranty, because at 50k miles, her transmission had to be replaced. Her car was always needing new rotors, tires and had lots of electrical surprises.

Good Luck, and Be careful!

Abdoman you are right. My buddy did tell me about those but he also said BMW apparently recalled the engines. The big thing is finding out how to identify if the engine was ever changed out.

Yes, check that the shortblock has been replaced. The dealer should be able to pull that info up as well. I think BMW will only replace them up to 100k miles.
My previous 95 540 went over 100k, and they replaced mine "out of goodwill" and only paid for half the cost. Not bad, considering it came with a 6yr/100k mile warranty on the engine.

Also, if there are maintenance records, see if the radiator, water pump, oil separator, has been replaced, I never had any transmission problems, my mechanic told me he seldom came across transmission replacements for the E34 V8's. And being the last year model for the E34 540, there shouldn't be any major issues.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the read man. I have been scouring ebay for a good deal. Now I know exactly what to look for. With this economy where it is right now, I don't think a car payment will do me any good. Besides, who wants to keep a car more than 5 years unless it's a 7 series or a porsche???
