Loosing P/seat memory

Hi All,

I have a 2001 540i6MT and I am finding that sometimes I lose all the memory on my power seat position memory. Have not had the chance to replicate the problem, but I think it happens sometimes when I leave the drivers door open for some time, without the key in the ignition while cleaning the interior....then the power seat does not work....so I then put the key in the ignition, and power seats work, but memory is lost. The other day I was conditioning the leather in my car, and I adjusted the front driver seat to a position to get to condition certain areas of the seat, and when I went to adjust it back after 10+ mins, there was no power to the seat. So had to put the key in ignition and get it to move....but all memory was lost. I could take it to the dealer....but thought if anyone has had any experience with this issue.

Thanks in Advance.

I’m thinking that there is constant power to the memory seat buttons in which case when you hit the buttons while cleaning it sets the seat to exactly that position. While the power to the seats is along a (timed) circuit similar to the interior lights that would turn off after a certain time period. That way the lights don’t drain the battery while the door is open for long periods of time (the trunk lights do this). Just speculation, hope it helps.

Sounds reasonable, but timing out the power to the seats after sometime should not (at least I think it should not) wipe out the memory though. Interesting...will need to run some experiments to make it repeatable before reporting it to the $110/hr skillful people at the dealer.

Did you fix the problem?
You might need a new memory module.
My steering wheel position gets messed up sometimes, but not the seats (although they are all connected),
and the dealer told me after running tests, that it needed a new memory module,
like a $200 job.

CosmosBlack, I have not taken it to the dealer due to random happenings in life. I'll try to take it in one of these weekends. Thanks for the heads up on the memory module.
