I own a 1999 540i. I purchased the car three years ago. The power started gradually coming down, but i never noticed it because i was always driving it. It has 143K miles. Just yesterday i drove the same car with 95K miles and it has better acceleration and power. I always serviced my car accordingly and sooner at most times. there are really no sympthoms, check lights. Motor idles perfectly, no shakes, plugs and packs where replaced. what can it be.. the only thing i haven't replaced is the fuel filter. Can that affect my power?

Since you don't have a check engine light, this probably isn't the problem, but the 5 series have had problems with the catalytic converters. If those start to plug up, you can lose power.

For starters I'll change the fuel filter, which it probably needs. Does anybody know where to get catalytic converters for a descent price? I've heard nightmares or those costing an arm and a leg.
