i have to say... bmw's are just impressive vehicles. my office has several new converts (owners). out of 26 loan officers in my division there are 9 of us who own a bmw. my boss who already owns a 2002 745i picked up his new Z8 today. verrrrry sweet. (black with tan interior) - he let me take it out, my first drive in one. loved it.. so smooth, i was extremely surprised about that. i figured that since it has the m5 engine in it, i assumed the ride would be rough (firm) and the shifting to be very race-like. he got the 6 speed manual. the engine sounds wonderful. overall, my impression was that its a beautiful sporty car, but more in line with a GT and not so much race inspired. got lots of looks as i was driving around as there aren't very many on the road that i've seen. small interior, i like the retro look and the push button starter. i have to say though that i enjoy my m3 better, feels more connected to the road, the exhaust note sounds like a racecar.. very cool to actually drive one though. my boss was happy, lucky guy too, as he ordered his new 745li today too. *must be nice.
sorry, went off subject there for a minute. but i figured anyone in here would appreciate the Z8 for what it is.
well, after my boss came back from picking up his new car - we all lined up the bmw's just to check them out. it was a nice day out, we looked for pretty much any excuse to talk about cars, especially when the boss is leading the group, who are we to argue??
well, here's how it broke down - black 745i (my boss' current car), his Z8 (black with tan int), white 2003 745li, 2001 blue 540i sport, black X5 3.0, 330i sport (performance package - just bought yesterday) orient blue, my M3 carbon black, 325i sport - titanium color, 328i sedan silver, 325i sedan red and a Z4 (gold color). pretty cool to see them all lined up.

i'd like anyone else's input also, i'm thinking of getting rid of the M3 in the fall and looking at the X5 4.8is to get something (more practical per my fiancee - ha!). i've read that even though the M crew won't recognize the X5 4.8 as an M vehicle, it pretty much is, just without the badging. has anyone out there driven one? i want the utility of an SAV but still want something sporting. i was looking at the latest range rover as its essentially a bmw, but i think its a bit too plush. i was performance too!!! any advice would help.

thanks!

Cool review of the Z8. I don't really care for them, I think they are pretty overpriced. My neighbor has one and one time I was driving behind him and the exhaust is impressively loud. I mean, my car's exhaust is pretty obnoxious, but the Z8's pipes completely drowned mine out when I was behind him.

The X5 4.8is is a really kickass SUV and I would definitely get that if I was shopping for a performance SUV. But keep in mind that it doesn't have the M badge because it did not earn it. BMW recognizes a vehicle as an M car when it meets certain acceleration, handling, and braking characteristics, and it must be RWD. The 4.8is handles very well, but I doubt it met BMW's typical M-car handling standards. and it's AWD, which isn't bad, but doesn't fall into M category.

IMO, keep the M3. It's practical enough and it kicks sooo much ass.
