I heard that it will have AC standard and a Toyota engine here in the US. In Europe it is a "drivers car", I don't think most Americans can grasp that concept, everyone here is an exception of course.

The American model maybe, but the original Elise is no joke. It may have 156hp but it's light, so it's quick and handles like nothing else. Horsepower isn't everything, the power to weight ratio is.

But its exterior is designed for a much more powerful car. It is only made for looks... but disgraces all the real performance cars that actually need its unique design.. this just takes advantage of its appeal to make some $$.

It's not supposed to be a supercar, it's a pure-bred sportscar. The Elise was designed with twisties in mind, not the Autobahn. Being mid-engined and the extensive use of aluminum in the chassis give the Elise catlike nimbleness. It is no Lamborghini, I'll agree with that, it is a threat for cars such as the Boxter, Z4, Miata, and the like.

Its a threat for porsche thats for sure.

It will sell very well.. especially for younger audience.
It has all the characteristics for a low price:
- high acceleration speed, spider-like front, limb. rear engine, and if you can change the exhaust note you will never tell the difference.

the elise is an ultimate street machine.

the concept of light weight and absolut purism connected with the middle placed engine is exactly what makes that car great. it needs a knowing hand as that car is really sensible and a ricer will never stand a chance. not lookwise, performance wise, style wise or price wise. that car is a real purist. sure, it is love and hate thing, but that car is a astonishing driving machine.

I'm too cheap to actually buy an Elise, but I'd definatly drive one if I could. The roads around A2 are excellent for good-handling machines like that.

So let me get this straight...

Mini Cooper S with 200HP goes from 0-60 in 6.5sec.

Lotus Elise with 156HP goes from 0-60 in 4.5 sec?

I do not think I could have imagined a lighter car than a Cooper. That thing would have to be made literally outof plastic to be so light.

MINI weights 2,496 lbs,so Lutus must weight atmost 1,600 LBS or even less.

I do not think that they will be so light in U.S. versions.. that is just not street-safe. Imagine going athigh speed on bumpyroad... It will be horrible in accidents. They would have to increase its waight.. and with 156HP ... [rofl] .. you know what will happen!

From the Lotus Web Site:

the Elise is constructed around a strong, rigid, yet lightweight extruded and bonded aluminum chassis. Consistent with the Lotus design philosophy of achieving performance and efficiency through light weight, this high tech chassis weighing less than 150 lbs allows for a complete vehicle weight of approximately 1700lbs (current European specification).

Push, your guess was pretty close!

that is ignorant push. the elise is so light because it has no a/c, no radio, no interiour covers or carpets, no backseat. lots of stuff is made from aluminum and is aluminum frame work. that is the stiffest frame you can get for reasonable money btw. that car is not being build since 2 years, in contrary there is so much experience through years that reflects in that baby. the mini weighs much miore as there is more stuff in it. take that stuff out, like radio, backseat, a/c, all that unneeded interiour decoration...etc. would that make the car less safe? no, but much more lighter!

it is developped from racing, and that is where great cars come from. if i want something safe i buy a tank.

you are right, there are cars outthere that are saver, but that is not the point with this car.

Lotus lacks some of the luxuries that the mid-life crisis crowd has come to expect; nothing is power assisted or operated in the Elise, it's hard to get in and out of, and you'll have to explain to everyone why you bought it.
