alright from what I undertand my car has a m10 which is a SOHC 1.8, and the m20 was put in newer 318s was a DOHC version of that. How hard would it be to do a swap? And would I be able to find one of these motors for cheap? What came in the M3?

That is the M40 for the 318I, and the M42 for the 1991 BMW 318is. In order to do that swap you would be dealing with a complete wiring and computer replacement, The engine itself, and possibly some other pieces and parts. The M42 and M40 engines runn off a Motronic system, while yours is runn off of a Jetronic. If I was gonna spend the time and money I would just do an M20 or possibly a M50/52. The only problem with that is redoing the suspension in the front to deal with the heavier engine.
