I love the M3. Looking at all the posts I can not find where to compare the different models that BMW makes against the M3? I am looking at a 95 M3 or a 97 convertible M3 (think that was the first year for convertible?) but maybe I should get a 325 or 328 something if I am going to do upgrades in suspension and basic engine mods?

Right?
Thanks for the help!

Other than a slight resemblance to the 325, 328, the M3 is totally different animal. The only 3 series that even remotely compares to an M3 is the 330i with ZHP package and that is still 100 hp's less than the M3. If what you want is out right power and performance....then the M3 is what you want. If these things are not that important to you....save the money on insurance and buy the 325. JMO

Unless you are worried about insurance cost, I'd say get the M3 and you will be very happy with it. There's really no point on getting a 328i or 325i when you can afford an M3.

Aside from the cosmetic differences...the M3 has a better suspension system, more torque, larger engine (significantly more power), and better brakes.

Either car you decide to go with, make sure the waterpump is new since there have been some issues with the plastic impalers on the older ones.

Like everyone said an M3 isnt a package for the 3-series. Its almost a different car. If you get the M3 I would recommend a good high performance driving school where Ferrari and Porsche drivers learn how to correctly drive their cars. I believe BMW has something like this for their M3 customers already.
