Has anyone heard of a whistle noise on a 2001 M5 at 120mph?
I just purchased a used M and took it this past weekend upstate NY and opened it up. When I reached 120 it started to whistle until I got back below 100.

Thanks [scratch]

Hmmm, never heard of this before. Perhaps you have a mobile phone aerial on the roof of the car? Either that or you have a busted seal around the windows/doors I would guess.

BTW, how is the car? I'm very interested in the E39 M5. How many kms has it done and does it still chew through the oil? Also, have you upgraded the clutch? The standard one is only 9" by 11" I think and gives up the ghost pretty quickly with lots of full-blooded gearchanges and quick starts.

Keep us posted!

Nothing on the car in the way of aerials... The noise seems to come ffrom the center of the window. I am going to call the dealer and ask them as well.
The car is freakin awsome though.
I have put 1500 miles on it already. I purchased it with 39k miles on it.
Have not had to add any oil yet... hopefully it will not become a problem.

This may sound irrelevant...BUT do it. Go check the lift pads under your car.
There should be 4 pieces total, 2 on each side. If they are missing, rushing air that goes by them will make a whistling sound that goes up thru' the front windshield pillars. Much like when you blow air over an open bottle.
Good Luck!

Well I have a 5er with the 2.5L I6 in it(a '99) and I routinely go over 120mph and I have never heard the noise like that....of course you are going to hear wind noise and that speed but it shouldnt sound...ummm...strange......If your sunroof is closed make sure you closed the cover that blocks the sun too....that cuts down on a whole lot of the wind noise.....

As adrean says...it is wind brother........listen to it like music, not noise. Have it checked and keep us posted.
