I have owned my 2000 M5 for 4 months and have just found out that the BMW approved oil is no longer RS10W60 and is now Castrol TWS.

the RS oil was £26.99 for 4 litres from petrol stations and could be bought with company petrol cards, therefore since I had a petrol card, I would just pay the tax on the oil rather than the total cost.

TWS is only available from BMW, is prices at £13.99 per litre and cannot be bought using a petrol card!!!!!!!

Therefore as a 30,000 miles per year driver, I am now £840 per year worse off as a result of this marketing driven ploy to drag even more money out of me as a BMW owner.

I am seriously P***ed off and I would be interested to hear if there are similar drivers out there who have found this problem to be a similarly unexpected funancial penalty....

Also, needing 1 litre of oul for every 500 to 700 miles seems a lot to me, does this seem right to other M5 drivers?

I cant answer the question about the cost of oil - though I know petroleum products in europe are much more than the US which would suck.

The oil every 500 - 700 miles seems excessive, but if you are doing a lot of stressful driving (ie a lot of acceleration), it can be quite normal to burn a decent amount of oil... though not for 500 - 700 miles. I thought it was bad when I was going through 1 quart (almost 1 liter) of oil every 1,500 miles (which i do have a nasty oil leak too...), but on a z4 forum, it looks like they add a quart every 2,000 - 3,000 miles.

i'm a little surprised at this thread

you have the money to buy a car like an M5 then skimp
on taking good care of it?

but on a positive note - the dealer is a "stealer" they always rip you
off and overcharge you. just because they can. if u change your own
oil, or if you go to an indy then they will tell you what i'm about to tell
you.

how long have you used RS10W60? how long did the previous owner
use it? and the car ran fine right? keep on using it!

and did u notice that you've had to
needing 1 litre of oul for every 500 to 700 miles
AFTER changing oil companies? or was this happening all the time?
let us know what you decide =]
