My 01' M5 with 23K miles on it set a code and when I took it in, the computer says that the Rt. bank VANOS "pack" is bad. The tech said he had replaced several of these on the earlier M5's (mine was a very early production 2001). The dealer said he would just go ahead and replace both VANOS packs (left and right bank). Is this supposed to be a normal problem for these cars? Is this a big deal? He also said he wanted to "update" the computer software. I guess that's o.k. as long as it *improves* performance!
