okay, so my sister owns a 92' 525 right? she has the stock rims on it and she decides that she needs new tires considering that the current tires are bald. so she took it to merchants and apparently they told her that new tires would be over a thousand dollars because they need to be metric tires shipped overseas. is it just me, or does that seem a little retarded? does anyone know the real deal on this situation? any help would be appreciated.

That does seem a little retarded. I went to TireRack.com and punched in 1992 BMW 525i. TireRack says the stock tires are 205/65-15...is this correct? If so, she can get Ultra High Performance All-Seasons for about $60-$70 each off of the TireRack web site.

Merchants doesn't know what they are talking about.

The E28 Five series, E24 Six Series and E23 Seven series came with metric rims (390 mm, approx. 15.3 inches if I recall correctly) and have to run crappy Michelin TRX tires, which cost a lot of coin. Those are what Merchants is talking about, but you don't need to put them on an E34 (or any of those other cars, which is why most people have switched to 15s or 16s on those cars). In fact, unless she bought a car that somebody stuck old metric rims on, which would be highly unlikely, those tires would not even fit her rims, which are 15s. The 525i runs a 205/65/15 or thereabouts, but you could probably put on a 225/60/15 like the 535i.

Heresy,

Ok, if you try taking your sister's car in yourself, I bet you they won't tell you any "metric" story. When they see a lady driver, it's slit-throat time! I've heard alot of tales like these, including from my wife's experience, numerous times.

I'd go and tell the tire merchant where to shove his jack. I live in England and have a euro 1989 325i. When i change i use imperial sized tires shipped over from the US!!!! even my dads '92 M5 uses imperial units on the wheels. don't know where the merchant gets his info but all cars over here uses imperial measurements as well.

I had a right hand drive Mustang and it had metric rims on it, the tires were a bit more expensive than imperial but not a lot more.
