more idle

The son picked up his 86 325 yesterday and we knew it had an idle problem.
As near as we can tell its the idle controller next to the ecu. We ran the test as
best we could (not being real up on electronics [???1] ) any way it seems the
idle control box isn't putting out the correct voltage which seems to say its
bad.
Any pointers appreciated. And sources too.

If the idle is erratic (up and down) I would look at replacing the Air Mass Meter Boot. I've had this problem on two of mine. It doesn't take much of an air leak to cause this to happen. They crack after aging. Here is a link to the part. Note, this may not be your exact model, but it'll be close!

i would sugest just simply cleaning the idle control valve

You can't just simply test the voltage that the idle computer is putting out. The reason for this is that the idle air control motor doesn't operate on simple DC. The idle computer controls the operation of the idle air control motor via pulse width modulation, not by changing the voltage.
