Im decided to go for a quality car only for weekend use and for journeys (during weekdays i use the company car). Always loved the E39... and now i have enough to buy and "feed" one.

I have 2 chances:

520i Touring, 1998 with 130000km (with BBS alloys) - this one is beautiful! This one for 13500 euros.

520i Sedan, 1996 with 100000km (all original with extras) - Classical black. This one for 10000 euros.

Questions:

I intend to keep the car for at least 4 years (thinking about the future family) and its only to drive on the motorway for the weekend (and the typical weekend ride).

- Can i trust the car (engine, mechanics, etc) with this mileage? The cars have full service history at BMW.
- Can i expect the car to last and be "healthy"for at least 4 years? Im very very careful with cars and i drive about 20000km per year.
- Is the maintenance too expensive? Does this car give "expensive" troubles during the years? Is it "bulletproof" reliable?

Im about to close deal this weekend... if i have time il post pictures of the 2 models.

Many thanks.

The mechanics of the car are all but flawless- if the car is in good condition you wont experience any major problems for years.

The electronics do have a tendency to get funky after awhile, but nothing that is truely serious or detrimental.

BMW maintenence isnt the cheapest thing out there, but the E39 wont cost any more than any other bmw to service. Over the last 4 years the only major problems i've had with the car (aside from dumbass women drivers running into it, while its parked in a gas station) was a busted radiator, and bad rear window motor.

I had an E39 - Quite honestly I had quite a few problems with mine and it all started at about 120k mi mark. If you don't have a lot of money to spend on the repair and maintenence, I would not buy one. I finally had to get rid of it, it was costing me way too much money.

I loved the car, it was beautiful inside and out and great to drive. I would recommend going with an E36, or E46. The 3 series is a much more reliable car and because so many more are made the parts are cheaper. I had 2 E36s and both were very reliable and very fun to own.
