My bmw is a 1987, 325E and it has 175,000 miles on the engine. It runs rough. I have replaced the OS sensor, idle control motor and module which helped a little but not much. The cars tags are expired by 5 YEARS because I canot figure out the problem I stick a screw driver in the tube to the mass air flow sensor to get it to run corectly or almost correctly with out the srew driver it wont start. the srew driver is used to give the engine enough air to run. (this is an intermitent problem sometimes i dont need the screw driver for the car to get enough air) [scratch] [chair]

Do you get a check engine light? Sounds like you have a SERIOUS vacuume leak. These cars will laugh at you if you try to start them with ANY kind of vacuume leak.

Oh nevermind, ETA's dont have check engine lights. Now that FW26 mentions electronics... thats what it sounds like.

Lol actually I was supporting your vaccuum idea. That's what it sounds like to me. Would that show up on the dash anyways?

yeah sounds like the AFM because when he sticks a screwdriver in it, it runs properly. spray some lubricant in it and see if that helps. If not, get a new AFM. Also, check your intake boot, it may be cracked.

Do you have a bentley manual? It has a whole section on troubleshooting idle problems that may guide you through fixing this. it checks everything from the cold start valve to the O2 sensor.

I'm also thinking you might have a broken wire going to the AFM. If the computer is not getting feedback from it that might cause your problem.
