Hi All,

New BMW owner here--just got my 2004 Z4 2.5! Very excited.

I've been reading this forum for a while and found your advice really helpful. Hope you can give me some tips. The dealer was trying hard to sell me various protection packages (for paint, softtop, interior, extended warranty, scotch guard, etc). Is any of these worth getting?

Because I need to park outdoor at work and I'm thinking that the paint sealant may be helpful (and to save time & money on waxing too!). What do you think?

Any advice and tip will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
newbie

You should look into paint protection film to protect the front end from rock chips. As for the dealer offering the paint protection, it's basically paint sealant for a hefty price. You may be better off having a professional detailer come to your house every 3-6 months for a full detail.

Welcome aboard and congrats! I would shy away from purchasing any dealer fabric or paint protection since most of the time it's way overpriced. If you do park outdoor, my best advice is to get a cheap car cover from places like WalMart($30-$50). It takes about 5 minutes to cover your car and will work wonders against bird droppings.

Good call. Not only is it overpriced, but sometimes they make shit up. I believe one member stated how his dealer was trying quite hard to sell him a "clearcoat" for $800 or so. Every single new car produced COMES with a clearcoat....it's part of the paint job.

Don't bother with the dealersip's stuff, most of the time they sell overpriced items that are pretty much worthless to you. If you want to protect your car, purchase a car cover as Tom suggested and maintain it properly. Wax the vehicle once a month (assuming you use a regular wax) and wash it regularly, clean & condition the leather regularly (once every 1-2 months, depending on what you use), and purchase a good all-purpose interior cleaner.
It's not rocket science to keep your car clean and a little bit of effort on your part goes a REALLY long way to keep your car in great condition. And if you simply don't have the time, you can also pay someone else to take care of your car for you!

[wave] newbie...

I agree with the fellas [thumb] ... ALL the items the dealer wants to sell you is where they make their $$$.

The only [add on] I purchased ($299) on my new Z4 was the wheel & tire protection.

Keep your paint clean. I use 'Klasse' polish and wax. It goes on easy and does [NOT] create any white dust or cause the white discoloration on black rubber or trim, like Zymol does... [nono]

Other than that, use a good synthetic oil (Mobil-I) and you will be good to go...

Hey 'MrE'... I'm going to try and get my pic's posted this weekend. I'm lovin' my Z...
