Need feedback on pc choice...¿

I just got cleared for $3,000 worth of financing for a pc and need some opinions.

1. AMD Athlon or Pentium 4¿
2. dual processors or single¿
3. 60G 15,000rpm harddrive or 200G 7,500 rpm harddrive¿
4. 15" LCD or 19" CRT¿
5. Hard drive cooler or no hard drive cooler¿
6. CD/CDROM/DVD-RW or one DVD and one CD/DVD-RW¿

what are you using it for? that makes a BIG difference.

this is how it pans out.

1. Intel totally owns, unless you use office applications 90% of the time. so i would say if you have the MONEY get a P4, they clock the speed at which they are marketed.

2. If you are doing a lot of rendering, or are editting a lot of sound or any shit like that, get dual. otherwise get single, its cheaper.

3. i've never seen a 600gb SCSI hdd, so i'll assume you meant 60gb. I'd get the 200gb IDE, it doesn't make that much difference, and infact you could probably just get 2 120gb's or something like that to save money.

4. 19" CRT will give you better resolution, only get a small LCD if you need to transport it a lot.

5. meh, who cares. make that your last expense.

6. get two drives. way more convenient.

Basic PC usage, and as a tie-in between 2 turntables, mixer, drum machine, Roland 808 groovebox, Roland MC-505, and a synth via midi to act as a digital studio workstation and filter/EQ. Will also be used for a dramatically large download center for as many pictures of beautiful nude women as I can possible find.

Damn man..I just build a system for my sis:

Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HyperThreading 800fsb system with top of the line i865 800fsb Gigabyte motherboard, diamond-grade 512MB 533mhz RAM, 64MB excellent video card, excellent case, and all little other things for about $900.

This is almost the fastest combination on the market (faster than 3.06gGhz since it is HyperThreading... thus acting like 2 processors) except for the Xeon Dual Combination and 800Mhz Ram which I didn't feel like buying (which I think is a waste of money).

I bought everythig part-by-part... they don't sell systems like these in stores

the 3.06 has hyperthreading. and its only usefull when you need a second virtual processor. otherwise you keep that pipeline intact and enjoy 3.06ghz of pure clockspeed.

Well if you're including the cost of a new flat panel in there as well, you could build a quality machine for around $1800 to $2300 depending on the size of that flat panel.

If you're going to do a lot of ripping music files, I'd deff go for the SCSI drives and get a gig of RAM.

YOU MUST GET THE NEW MAC G5 its the worlds fastest computer thats right worlds fastest. once you go mac windows will look like crap trust me i have a mac ibook and i love it!!!!! then i went and bought a sony vaio for a base station computer and it has been nothing but problems ! ! ! !

I have a bunch of computers I built myself. I have one running pure SCSI (every component runs off the SCSI bus) 10,000rpm and 15,000rpm drives and one with both SCSI and IDE 7200rpm drives. SCSI is sweet but the price you spend on the drives makes it not worth it unless you are using it for a server, graphic artist, or for AutoCAD. If you are going to be recording and storing raw music you better go with as much drive space as you can handle. 200Gb is a lot of space and will suffice for a while, but you will need to think about getting another one sometime down the road. It really depends on how much you are going to be storing at any given time. The Intel is the way to go. I have both the Intel and Athlon and love them both, but if I had to pick one it would definitely be the Intel chip. Make sure to get a really good MB. It will make a world of difference, as will very good memory. The Athlon system I am running has a non-legacy MB. Pure Firewire and USB. I love building computer systems. So much fun.

How can you say that??!!??

Any true computer expert would never use a MAC... yes the new G5 is faster that a Xeon system, but who would want to be stuck with a MAC if they actually do real work on it. NEVER!! There is more to a computer than speed... and the Mac interface is for a beginner (or very specialized) use only!..

Actually, all the statistics you have seen on the G5 are all bs and completely biased and artificially inflated.

If you have $3,000 to spend, go with an Intel P4...make sure to get one that supports hyper-threading. Go with 512MB RAM, and go with a Western Digital 200GB Special Edition IDE hard drive, or go with dual 100GB hard drives in a RAID 0 (Striped) configuration . Video card should be the ATI RADEON 9800 Pro or whatever the hell is the fastest. Speakers should be Klipsch and the monitor should be a 17" or 18" Sony LCD monitor (you can get a 17" Sony LCD for like $450 now).

I'm not even going to get speakers with the comp. I can pull right off of the back of the soundblaster and sync through my PA amp. That is true surround sound!
My roomate just got the G5 and both he and I have found that unless your are running photoshop, video enhancement, or at home digital graphics, the thing is a waste of money. He is a production manager so he has a use for it. I, on the other hand, need it for audio, and the software I need cost about 1/3 more for mac.

AMD is a good chip (I am running an Athlon XP 2200+ 1.8GHz), very powerful. Unfortunately, Athlon XP's have one problem: they run HOT! Right now, I am typing up this post (which is basically idle for a CPU) and my chip is running at 123 F (and I have one of the best heatsink/fan setups available)! If I were you, I would invest in an Intel P4 with Hyper-Threading (retail, of course). The P4's run much cooler and are much faster than Athlons now.

AMD is known for running hot. 123 F is not to bad. They can run a lot hotter and have no probs. I have mine overclocked and it is running at 54 C/129 F in the dead of summer (very hot her now) w/no problems at all. My Intel chip runs cooler, but does not respond to heat as well as the Athlon chip.

I Know all you xp users didnt know that windows is in deep shit.. xp is riged to make certain programs work and certain ones have probs or dont work. Like explore works find right, but netscape browser will f*uck up all the time because // xp is made attack netscape so that is will have probs //
