I just bought a 1987 325e coupe. I got it from a guy at work for $1500. It runs good and is in real good shape. There are a few minor issues, but nothing major. One issue I've been having is hesitation throughout the rpm range. It accelerates, hesitates, accelerates, hesitates, etc. I've tried searching, but couldn't find someone else with a problem like this. It idles fine, so I've ruled out a vacuum leak. I took the MAF apart and cleaned the board with a pencil eraser and the potentiometer (spelling?) moves with the throttle fine. I know you're not supposed to do this, but the guy I bought it from has been a BMW mechanic for 18 years. And it was his idea. He doesn't know exactly the problem, so I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Welcome and congrats on the bimmer!!

Could be fuel system related. I experienced this on a non-bimmer. It turned out the fuel filter was dirty. Change the fuel filter, a relatively quick and easy thing to do, and run several tanks of injector cleaner thru it.

Welcome to the board! Fellow eta owner here.....

Mine occasionally has this same kind of periodic hesitation in different places in the RPM band on wide open throttle as the RPMs climb. I haven't been able to nail it down yet. Over the course of owning my car, I've replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, fuel pump, O2 sensor, valve cover gasket (yes, a leaky valve cover gasket on these cars can do this), etc. Other things it could be are plug wires, fuel delivery related, vacuum leaks, or possibly even the coil.

By the way post up some pics of the new ride.

He found the problem. He disconnected the o2 sensor and it runs great now. Apparently, it acts like a o2 sensor is there ands sets a median value. Eventually, I'll replace it. For now I'm just going to drive it like it is.
