The one thing I am aware of is the connecting rod bearing recall issues. If you are looking at showroom new, the problem should be solved? If you are looking at used "new" then check the recall service work.

This should not be a problem on the "04-05" models. Even if the car does have this problem, BMW has it down to a science on fixing the problem. I have had no problems since my rod bearing were done. It drive so nice...

I have an 03 M3 Coupe, and had the rod bearing recall done 2K ago. The recall is up to production date 05/22/03. Therefore, 04/05 should not be an issue. The car is so sweet. As Ferris would say, "If you have the means, I highly recommend it."

The 2005 M3 should be perfect, considering it's been out for a while and there was plenty of time to work out any bugs. I don't know if there will be a 2006, but if really interested I'd snatch up the icon of the e46 before it's too late.

I spoke to my mechanic yesterday about getting one and he told me not to because they were blowing engines left and right and right then it occured to me that one of the guys bought theirs in with #5 piston blown! There was a big ass hole in the thing and I am assuming that the rod bearing would cause that. My house will be done in late may so I will give it until then and I will pick one up if nothing else scary comes up about it. Believe me, I will keep her nice and shiny!

Well if the engine has a defect, BMW replaces it for free... But for some reason I wouldn't be surprised if that guy abused his M3, perhaps he likes the sound of 8000rpm 10 times a day.

I would agree on that one, anyone I have ever heard of that blew an M3 engine was abusing the car, a lot!

I am also looking to buy an M3 in the spring but will probably go a little older maybe an 02, just not sure if I will go coupe or convertible.
