I read in the May issue of Car and Driver that BMW is developing a Manual Transmission for the new M5 for the US market exclussively. It seems that we have a voice and someone is listening.

is there even a 7 speed manual anywhere?

imo the manual will be a beefed up 6 speed. i barely use the 5th gear as it is on my 6 speed, so i really don't know how useful the 7 gears will be. but that's just my opinion. we'll see if i ever get to try out the smg iii [:D]

oh and i'm willing to bet, not just bite my left nut on, the fact that there will never be a steptro for the m! Pete, you must be really talented or missing a rib or two to do what you were describing [hihi]

Yep, I read the article too. You're right: we do have a voice--our wallets! The American consumer market is still the largest in the world, almost $5 trillion dollars more than China!!! Nearly every firm that produces a manufactured good want's a piece of the American pie, and they're generally eager to please. For all the talk about BMW trying to please Chinese/Asian costumers, it's good to know that we still have a lot of weight to throw around.... [whip]

Honestly, call me crazy but I never really cared to see the new M5 with a manual transmission. This is definitely great news, but the M5 is a $90K supersport sedan and I have a feeling that mainly business men will buy it. I don't see the M5 as one of those "week-end cars", more as a daily driver. I would think that these business men would prefer and appreciate the better performance and inreased practicality comapred to stick shift.

Sure, I hate the M3 posers who don't know stick and get SMG just so they can say "I have an M3" but for a $90K sport sedan, I think all the non-enthusiasts will simply not buy one.

Yeah I actually can't see them doing it. I'll bite my left nut if they offer the M5 with a manual tranny [hihi] (that is to say I don't think it's very likely!)
Uh oh I just quoted your post so now I'm holding you to it Pete. [;)]

A 500hp V-10 as a daily driver???

I thought the e39 M5 was was 72k and the new one would go up to around 80k...the M6 might be 90k since it's a 6 series but I doubt it would sell as well if the M5 was 20k more than a 7 series... IMO the only car worth 100k+ in BMW's fleet is the 760.

Sure, why not? By default, the car operates in 400hp mode(you need to hit the sport button twice for all 507hp and proper throttle response) and I'm sure it's perfectly drivable on a daily basis as long as you keep the engine under 3,500rpm.
