I just discovered this board, so am completely new - howdy!
I am looking to buy an older Z3 as a second car, really as a toy to play with at weekends and stuff. I say older, probably 97 or 98, as that's what would fall within the price range I can afford. I'm familiar with BMWs, have owned several, and currently own a 2003 325i, which will remain my primary car. But I've never owned a Z3. Any of you experienced Z3ers out there have any tips on what I should look for? Are there any typical problems on a Z3 of that age? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the board, another Mississippian! I had a 97 Z3 2.8 and currently own a 98 M roadster. Common problems include the rear window clouding if not maintained regualrly, seams around the rear window coming loose, although once repaired the problem has not resurfaced, and some have complained of the "Z3's tearing themselves apart", although I have not had this problem.

Here is a link on the 'tearing apart" thing:Tearing Apart Issue

And here is a link of common Z3 problems and the fix: Z3 Fixit Page

And here is a link to a Road & Track:Road & Track article on Z3's:

Thanks Big Daddy, for the useful info and good links. The tearing apart thing is a little scary, but I was probably thinking of looking at the 1.9 4 cylinder anyway. By the way, I'm an adopted Mississippian, just moved here 5 years ago from England!
