Hello all - I have a 1991 325i Convertible with approx 58,500 miles. Recently I have begun to hear on random occasions a low pitch grinding sound. I'm thinking it may be one of the belts. The drive belt was changed at 24K miles approx 6 years ago.

I only hear the sound when I start the car. After the car is warm and driven for a while the sound no longer exists. I'm thinking of not messing around since the car is in excellent condition and just change all belts, pulley and water pump and hope for the best. Anyone have other ideas.

I would just change the belt for now and see if that helps. If you can start the car and listen sometimes you can pin point a noice using a screwdriver, by lightly touching in the area of the sound. Be careful!

Take dan's advice first (since belts are cheap). If that doesn't fix it, check the alternator...Mine made the same sound!

If you find out it IS the alternator and you need to buy one - I have one you can use as your core so you don't have to pay the deposit and wait to get it back...

Don't mean to dig up an old thread, but I didn't want to make a new one for almost the same question. When I start my car, after it sits for awhile, it makes a noise more like something is just rattlling. Once it's warmed up a bit, it goes away. Unlike abellia's, mine doesn't really sound like a grinding. Oh and one more thing, once my car gets to like 3,000 rpm's it stops, then when it goes back down to about 1,500 rpm's, the noise comes back.

Thanks in advance, Drew

Last I checked dealerships put a new one instead of wasting the customers time rebuilding and independents do the same who in the world has time to wait for their alternator to get fixed this world is moving all the time. Your def. living in oldtimer times my boy.

If you do it urself thats a diff. story.
