I am new to the crowd and have a 2000 6sp 540, awesome car. It has 80k miles on it. The engine seems to be more noisy than I am use to. Is this common? I changed the oil and put Castrol full Syn 5W30 in it, but it really did not change anything.
Hmm what kind of noise is it? Scraping noise from the front, an exhaust noise, etc.? A 540i sport would probably have a more aggressive exhust than a normal 540i though.
It is a sport, but it is more of what I would call a chatter. The values or lifters seem to chatter for a couple of seconds when you start it also (when it is cold)

Hmm might want to use a heavier weight oil - or the vanos units could be making chattering noise.
The reason there is lifter tap when you start the car is lack of oil pressure to the hydraylic lifters - after the car has been on for about 10 seconds it should go away almost completely. If it doesn't, do some research on www.roadfly.org and www.bimmerforums.com...they might reccomend a different weight oil.
