ANy tips on changing the oil pan gasket on a 1998 E39 528i? Do I have to remove the radiator shroud in order to jack out the engine for clearance? I tried just jacking it up, but it seems like the fan shroud is hitting the fam before I have enough room to get the pan out.

take out the fan and shroud. then support the engine from above. take off the motor mount nuts, and take out the six subframe bolts. the cradle will drop down so you can wiggle the pan out.

Re: oil pan gasket

You'll also need to remove the dipstick tube(which has a sensor connector attached to a flange and the hose from the valve cover breather) and remove the steering shaft from the rack.
You'll prolly need an O-ring for the dipstick tube.
Once those things are done, I suggest you "wiggle" the pan out toward the rear, as opposed to forward.
If it's still difficult, you might be able to remove the suction tube(3 bolts & another new O-ring) to make it easier, or jack the engine higher.
