so im trying to get my oil pan off of my car and so far ive gotten everything my books says to get off outta the way. i unbolted the steering knuckles and rack and its not in the way any more but now theres this little silver tube thing that sticks down into the pan and keeps it from sliding forward far enough to get it off

how do i get rid of that thing or get around it?

The silver tube connects to the bottom of the inlet manifold.
Ive never removed the oil pan while the motor was in the car so i can't tell from experience, and I'm not going to tell you to remove the manifold because its a pita to do aswell.
You can try pushing the tube down (compressing the spring at the top of the pan) and pulling it out that way, but it will be a pita to put back in.
maybe someone else will chime in.

If you just need a bit more clearance, try undoing the engine & tranny mounts and jacking up the engine/tranny a bit. Good way to check your engine mounts... chances are if they've never been done, they'll need doing. If it's the tube that Joseph is talking about, he's right, it's a PITA. Jack that baby up if you can.

yeah i can get a wrench on it but i didn't know if i wanted to take it off. ill prolly try to jack it all up tomorrow and drop it that way
If you have the time, the space, and the effort, why not pull the motor out of the car and replace things while you have it off the road. Same for you AWD_Guy!
Undo the engine loom plug from the computer, undo the cooling system, undo the exhaust, and drive shaft, undo the shifter linkages, (plus all 4 engine and transmission mounts)
And shes out! Pretty sexy really [;)]

...and undo the gas line, the starter wire, the o2 sensor wire, idle control module wire, ground wire, igntion coil wires, throttle cable, cruise control cable, tranny cooling lines, AC lines, reverse switch, intake boot,...
Jeeze Joseph, try not to make it sound so easy![hihi] (although, it is pretty damn easy for what it is, I'll give you that much. hehehe)

yeah...I've blown a few engines turboing my focus, so I've pulled these things out before. Just rather avoid that! I will attempt it next spring...if things dont work out, then I will just lift the engine out.

You could have done it today... it feels like spring right now! +15 degrees Celcius (59.F). Gunna drive home with the sunroof open if it's not raining!!! (Of course in Ottawa it only managed to reach +9.)

True, but I have to save up for some parts, from what I read, you need to remove pretty much the entire front suspension to do the oil pan job, so I'd like to replace some other things while I'm at it.

i bought this car not running and already replaced the head so im not too keen on taking everything off again just to do the oil pan

and im pretty sure you dont need to take off the suspension.

all i had to do was unbolt the steering rack from its mounts and its out of the way.

now i guess i just gotta get another inch or so of clearance and it should come right off

Yes Joseph! Give'r! [headbang] You may never drive that car again! While you're at it, drop the exhaust out, pull the drive shaft and do the support bearing, drop the diff and do all the seals, and do the diff mount, subframe bushings, and trailing arm bushings:) Might as well do the rear wheel bearings... they're going to need doing at some point, right? Now THAT's a sexy job![^]

E30's; work on 'em as much as you drive 'em.[clap]

It's pretty late... I was about to say "just put a block of wood between the jack and the oil pan" but.... yeah. If you can get it under the bellhousing with a piece of wood, that should work... or even a bit farther back on the tranny. [scratch]
