I had a blow out on my way to work this morning in the white E28 below. I had been procrastinating the purchase of new tires for about 4 months now.'

Since I lost one tire and the whole lot needs replacing anyway, my internal debate is this:

Right now the tires I have on are 195/60/14's It may be a bit difficult to see in the pic below but these tires leave a bit of a gap between top of tire and fender.

I will probably go for some 205's for a bit more aggressive "look", but what is the best "look" as performance wise there is not much difference in 60's and 70's.

Should I "fill" up the gap with 70's or keep a lower profile with 60's?

Any differing opinions as to what I should do?

I think you should get larger wheels, 14s are very small. Actually this is the first time I have heard of 14" wheels on a bimmer! You could get some good deals on ebay.

I agree you should get larger wheels but if you don't want to spend on the wheels and just get tires, stick with the lower profile tires to maintain the handling characteristics. Also, if you get a taller tire, it will start looking like a lunar lander or a swamp buggy.[xx(] [8]

When shopping for wheels on ebay (or anywhere for that matter) should any BMW wheel with a 5 lug bolt pattern fit? Or are there many different sizes as apparently mine is 115.5 bolt pattern. Would the five bolt wheels off my wife's '97 740i fit on my '88 528e? There are a few of this type on ebay (not that I think it would look good on my car, but just hypothetically speaking).

Also...as I claim ignorance to most mechanical stuff, my spare is a 195/70 and the rest of my tires are 195/60. Am I causing any slight damage to the differential for any prolonged use of this spare? I hope to have new tires by Sunday.
